Msgr. Dominick K. Pocus, Kearny ‘legend’

Msgr. Dominick A. Pocus

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Kearny Jan. 25 for Msgr. Dominick A. Pocus, 83, who died Jan. 21.

“He has been with Our Lady of Sorrows for over 40 years,” said Father Michael O’Brien, Pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish. “He is a legend here in Kearny.”

A Bayonne native, Msgr. Pocus graduated from Seton Hall University and Immaculate Conception Seminary. He was ordained into the priesthood in 1945.

His first assignment was to Madonna Parish in Fort Lee before being transferred two years later to Our Lady of Sorrows Parish then in Harrison.

In 1952, he laid plans for a new church building in Kearny and also acquired the school building and convent. He later became administrator.

In 1964 Father Pocus was transferred to St.Ann’s Lithuanian Parish in Jersey City until his appointment as Pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows in 1968.

He was named a Prelate of Honor by Pope John Paul II in 1986.

In 1993, Msgr. Pocus was appointed Pastor of Holy Trinity Parish in Newark. He was later named Pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Kearny once again before retiring from active ministry in 1997 and being designated as Pastor Emeritus.

“He is well-loved here, and was a wonderful gentleman and exemplary priest,” Father O’Brien noted.
