Felician Sister carries Olympic Torch

TREASURED MOMENT — Sister Mary Timothy holds the torch before boarding the van carrying Olympic Torch Bearers.

Felician Sister Mary Timothy Ruszala recently carried the Olympic Torch for 2/10 of a mile.

Assigned to a stretch of Victory Boulevard in Staten Island, Sister Timothy and her torch-bearing colleagues boarded an official Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympics van which carried them along the route.

Each torchbearer left the van to run the assigned distance and then boarded the van for the remainder of the route. Sister Timothy’s moment of fame was at 10:50 a.m.

Sister Timothy belongs to the Immaculate Conception Province of the Felician Sisters headquartered in Lodi. She has been a Felician Sister for almost four decades.

Torchbearers were invited to purchase their torches. The Felician School for Exceptional Children, where Sister Timothy ministers, has purchased Sister Timothy’s torch and will use it in the future for Special Olympic games in which their students participate.

To become a Torch Bearer, Sister Timothy had to fill out an official application and seek nominations written by those who could testify to her personal “Torch Bearing” incidents in life.

Those who nominated her recognized her life of service as a Felician Sister, educator, social worker, and mission volunteer. The Olympic Committee recognized Sister Timothy’s activities from being a kidney donor to another Felician Sister to ministering in other countries.
