Archdiocese's oldest priest dies at 99
FOND FAREWELL -- Members of the priest community along with family and friends at a Mass of Christian Burial for Msgr. Walter G. Jarvis.

On the crisp winter morning of Feb. 8, some 70 priests, including Archbishop John J. Myers and Auxiliary Bishop Charles J. McDonnell, gathered at Saint Mary of the Assumption, Elizabeth, with family and friends, to commend to the Lord the oldest priest in the Archdiocese of Newark, Msgr. Walter G. Jarvais, 99, in the very place of his baptism.

Bright sunlight poured in through the tall, spacious windows at St. Mary’s, as the church filled with a sea of white albs, incense wafted through the air, and a ringing version of “Lift High the Cross,” accompanied the entrance procession. The mood was both sorrowful and concilliatory as mourners looked on.

State Assembly tables stem cell legislation
Opponents come out in force

“I am delighted that apparently so many legislators understand the real dangers presented by this legislation,” noted William F. Bolan, Jr., Executive Director of the New Jersey Catholic Conference (NJCC), in reaction to the tabling.

Lay witnessing to Stewardship
By Andrew Kaczynski

For over seven years, even before the Archdiocesan Stewardship Initiative began, Our Lady of Mount Virgin Parish, Garfield, has been promoting Stewardship as a Way of Life after its pastor, Msgr. Paul Bochicchio, and several members of the parish attended an International Catholic Stewardship Conference and learned what Stewardship is all about.

As a result of their attendance at that conference, Msgr. Bochicchio formed a Stewardship Committee to begin teaching and promoting Stewardship to the parish. Before beginning any activities, the committee studied the U.S. Bishops’ Pastoral Letter on Stewardship for over six months. By doing so, it obtained a good understanding of the spirituality and theology behind the concept as well as the energy and guidance to conduct its work.

Archdiocese celebrates Catholic Schools Week
MILITARY MAILBAG -- Students at St. Francis of Assisi School in Hackensack write letters to the women and men in the military.

The national celebration of Catholic Schools Week was marked by success throughout the Archdiocese of Newark.

“Catholic Schools Making a World of Difference,” this year’s theme, provided the framework for exploring the world beyond the classroom—the world of the neighborhood, the community, and the greater world beyond local borders.
