5, 2003 "Long overdue" Thank you, Msgr. Gilchrist! You have said in your Jan. 8 column what many of us have known for years. It is amazingly true and long overdue. Monsignor said that millions upon millions of baptized Catholics know little about the true Catholic faith, let alone practice it. Every faithful Catholic, not only the parish priest, knows examples of this within his or her own family. One of the best ways to so remedy it is for our priests to start teaching doctrine from the pulpit during homilies. The average Catholic is not going to pick up a religion book to learn on his own, but he can learn plenty sitting in the pew at Mass. Even non-Catholic visitors to Mass will come to better understand the true faith. Additionally, while teaching doctrine, our priests should also start teaching and preaching the pro-life message, because this is not one of many “social issues” of the so-called “seamless garment,” it is the pre-eminent social problem of our day, called by our Holy Father “the most important work on earth.” Too many priests do not confront the issue. If they did, maybe Catholics would not vote in the numbers they do for pro-abortion candidates. Priests speak to thousands of Catholics each week. What power for good could be accomplished if they would only use it. We do, indeed, urgently need to put on an “all-court press” to reclaim the faith. Deanna
Hohmann "Horrible
evil" From all appearances these hypocrites are ignoring the Vatican’s warning, so I implore the bishops to publicly challenge these pro-abortion politicians to answer the Vatican concern for their immortal souls! Since 1973, over 40 million babies have been legally killed in this Christian nation and many Catholic politicians have the blood of these children of God on their hands! Let us pray that they listen to the Holy Father. Barney Kiernan
