Assumption Academy in Emerson is the first school to be certified as a Homeland Security site in the tri-state area.

The distinction was granted by AWS Convergence Technologies, Inc. and WNBC-TV.

Through an Archdiocesan Continueing the Mission (CMT) grant, the PreK-8th grade school began to operate a real-time weather station last September as part of an educational program developed by AWS called Weathernet Classroom, comprised of the weather station and lesson plans for K-8th grade.

Operation Rice Bowl starts
Millions of Catholics will begin participating this month in Catholic Relief Services’ (CRS) annual Lenten program entitled Operation Rice Bowl, now in its 28th year.

“We are in a time of great need for spiritual connectedness, for compassion, for understanding and for resources to assist the poor,” said Joan Neal, CRS Deputy Executive Director for U.S. Operations. “Operation Rice Bowl offers a great opportunity for Catholics in the United States to respond in a meaningful way.”

Fulfilling Christ's call
By Andrew Kaczynski

The parish mission statement for the Community of St. Helen, Westfield, reads: “We, the Roman Catholic Community of Saint Helen, are nourished and sustained by the Eucharist. We ask for the grace of the Holy Spirit to help us live the words of Jesus. We are committed to bringing His Good News to others, in our community and beyond. United in prayer, we understand that it is our calling to use our time, treasure and talents for the benefit of all.” I found out when I visited the parish recently that this community is living out this mission statement to the fullest.

The original purpose of this article was to only highlight the fact that the parish automatically takes 10 percent (the biblical tithe) from its weekly collection and uses those funds for the needy. It will indeed do that. However, after meeting with the Pastor, Msgr. William Harms, and the Pastoral Associate, Marilyn Ryan, I discovered that stewardship is being practiced there in so many more wonderful and truly Christ-like ways and therefore felt it worthy to share those activities with the Catholic community of the Archdiocese of Newark.
