Bishops
act to halt abuse
DALLAS
(CNS) The U.S. bishops June 14 voted 229-5 to adopt special
legislation for U.S. dioceses to deal swiftly and firmly with allegations
of sexual abuse of minors by clergy or other church personnel.
Vatican
approval is needed before the norms can become law for the U.S.
Catholic Church.
The
norms were the second key element in the bishops effort to
end any form of sex abuse by clergy. A crisis has embroiled the
church across the country since January, when major scandals were
uncovered in Boston. Shortly before adopting the norms, the bishops
overwhelmingly approved a Charter for the Protection of Children
and Young People establishing a national policy of responding
quickly to sex abuse victims and permanently ousting any priest
who has abused a minor from any church ministry.

James the Apostle Church dedicated
BY
ROBERT DYLAK
This
is sacred space, Archbishop John J. Myers reminded the congregation
that overflowed the pews for the dedication of St. James the Apostle
Church in Springfield. The church is the fundamental space
where God gathers His people.
The Archbishop gave the homily at the Thursday evening June 6
dedication Mass. He was welcomed on his first visit to the parish
by Father Robert Stagg, parish pastor, who encouraged and organized
the efforts of his parishioners to build the first new church
in Union County in the past 25 years.

Celebrating
a half century in the Lords service
Father
Frank J. McNulty
Father McNulty credits his enjoyment of his 50 years serving the
Archdiocese to unusually good assignments from beginning to
end, and living with priests that I really admired. They were a
tremendous inspiration to me all the way through my first assignment
to my retirement.Deacon Joseph Dwyer has been named Executive
Director of the Office of Development by Archbishop John J. Myers.
He will take over the responsibilities for that office on July 1
and will work with the Archbishop and Vicars General to restructure
the office to meet the challenges of the coming year.
Msgr.
Martin F. OBrien
Msgr. OBrien noted that, while all his assignments varied,
he was always working in the ministry of people. A
Hoboken native and Seton Hall University and Immaculate Conception
Seminary graduate, Msgr. OBrien was ordained at Saint Patricks
Pro-Cathedral.
Father
Joseph M. Quinlan
As he reflects on his 50 years as a priest, Father Quinlan notes,
They went too fast, but I enjoyed them all.. A
graduate of Seton Hall University and Immaculate Conception Seminary,
Father Quinlan was ordained at Saint Patricks Pro-Cathedral.

Good
Stewards are helping homeless
BY DEACON
JOSEPH DWYER
Though the formal program initiating the Stewardship Way of Life
here in the Archdiocese of Newark is over, hardly a day goes by
that I am not reminded of the many ways parishes (and individual
parishioners) continue to respond in sharing their Time, their Talent
and their Treasure.
Although
most of our Stewardship examples are found within the parish boundaries,
ultimately we will branch out to the larger community as the Stewardship
Way of Life continues to catch fire, the fire of Gods love
for all of us.
