By

"It’s
the oldest Catholic parish in New Jersey. And [former pastor] Msgr.
John Hourihan is a dear friend of mine. We’ve all been blessed
by his missives," explained Governor James McGreevey last Tuesday
when asked why he was visiting St. John’s Church Soup Kitchen
on Mulberry Street in Newark.

Sexual
offenses reporting procedures set
Memorandum of Understanding seeks to protect children,
victims
On
Monday, Dec. 2 New Jersey Attorney General David Samson announced
that negotiations between the Division of Criminal Justice and the
New Jersey Catholic Conference have resulted in the most comprehensive
and precise agreement of its kind in the nation to establish specific
criteria and procedures for reporting sexual offenses to county prosecutors
and local police agencies.
The detailed agreement, in the form of a Memorandum of Understanding,
was built on a cooperative foundation among the Attorney General’s
Office, New Jersey’s 21 county prosecutors and the seven Catholic
Dioceses in New Jersey — the Archdiocese of Newark; the Dioceses
of Camden, Metuchen, Paterson and Trenton; the Byzantine Eparchy
of Passaic; and the Our Lady of Deliverance Syriac Catholic Diocese.
