Torch Run makes stop in Union City

MAIN CELEBRANT— Bishop Arias presided over the Mass celebration that honored Our Lady of Guadalupe and welcomed runners.
By Liesl Fores
“I really believe in Our Lady of Guadalupe, and I wanted to do something for her,” said 12-year-old Luis Bolanos, from St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Union City. Bolanos was the youngest runner in the next-to-last leg of the fifth annual Guadalupan Torch Run, arriving in Union City the evening of Dec. 11.

The Guadalupan Torch Run is an annual pilgrimage organized by the Tepeyac Association of New York, a non-profit organization that seeks social welfare and human rights for Latino immigrants, and several Catholic dioceses. In the past, it has taken place on the streets of the five boroughs of New York City. Mexican youths from all over New York run a course with blessed lit torches to churches throughout the city. The torches symbolize “the faith of the Mexican people, which is alive wherever they live.”

Where and why are they different? If I choose to contribute to one, do I also give to the other? Do I have to give to both? And where do these programs fit with other extraordinary efforts in my parish such as a capital campaign?
