Frequently Asked Questions

We at Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Newark are committed to making the selection of your burial or mausoleum space as easy and as simple as possible. This important decision however, becomes a difficult one when made at a time when a loved one is seriously ill or when a loss, either sudden or anticipated, has occurred.

To assist you in making your decision we have prepared for you, a list of the most commonly asked questions concerning obtaining a grave or mausoleum space.

What is the first thing I should do?
Take your time and don’t rush. Make sure you have all the information you need to make a good decision such as cost and availability. Look at all of your options and if you are not sure of something, please don’t hesitate to ask questions.

What are the different types of graves?
Graves will vary by the type of memorial stone specified for that section and, in some cases, if the grave can accommodate a concrete vault. A single grave can accommodate two and, in some cases where possible, three interments in a one above the other formation. Our representative will explain the various types to you and show you what sections are available. If you prefer to be side-by-side, you would purchase a double grave.

What is a concrete vault? Is it required?
A concrete vault is a concrete box that the casket is placed in and is sealed with a lid by the vault company. A concrete vault is the most commonly used outer container for protection of the casket and is not required, but is recommended.

Do I have to pay perpetual care for my plot?
The cost of perpetual care is included in the price of any of our graves currently offered for sale.

What other costs are associated with an in-ground burial?
First is an interment fee, which is the cost to open and close the grave. Second, if the family chooses, a concrete vault or other outer burial container would be purchased from the funeral director. Third, a foundation fee is paid for the concrete footing for the memorial stone. Fourth, a memorial stone would be purchased from an outside monument dealer and placed on the grave at a later date. Lastly, if the family chooses, a tent is rented for the comfort of those attending the committal service.

What is a crypt?
An above ground, vented, dry mausoleum vault.

What determines the cost of a crypt?
The area you select, level, number of persons and location within the building are all variables that need to be considered.

What is cremation?
Cremation is simply a form of disposition. The crematable casket is placed in a cremation chamber where, through a process of heat and evaporation, the body is reduced to its original elements-bone fragments, not ashes.

How does the cost of entombment in the mausoleum compare to the total cost of in-ground burial?
Entombment in the mausoleum is less in cost than in-ground burial.

Is there sales tax?
Because we are a Catholic organization there is no sales tax.

Is there any maintenance fee with a mausoleum crypt?
There are no maintenance fees. A portion of the proceeds of each crypt are placed in a perpetual care fund.

Do I have to pay for mausoleum crypts in full at the time of purchase?
No. Your Catholic Cemetery offers convenient payment plans designed to fit your means, some with no interest. Major Credit cards are also accepted.

Do they have Mass in the Mausoleum Chapel?
Each month we have a Mass of Remembrance. Your funeral mass is held at your local Parish Church.

When can I put my name on the crypt?
You are now able to purchase memorialization at the same time you purchase the crypt with the option of placing memorialization immediately or instructing us to hold memorialization until the time of need.

Who can I talk to about making arrangements?
Counselors are available seven days a week from 9:00 AM until 4:30 PM in the mausoleum or by appointment in the evenings at your home.

Can I bring a friend to show them my space?
The building is open to the public, so you may bring whomever you like to see your mausoleum crypt space. In addition, should you have any questions or need help you can come to the mausoleum office. There is always someone available to assist you during regular operating hours.

Do most people make their arrangements ahead of time?
Today approximately 75% of all burial space is purchased in advance.

When will I get my Deed?
When your crypt is paid in full you will receive your Certificate of Right of Entombment in approximately four to six weeks.

Which monument dealers represent or are affiliated with the Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Newark?
The Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Newark is not represented by or affiliated with any one or group of monument dealers.  Anyone calling you stating that they are is not reputable.  In the past grieving families have been called by such dealers soliciting work or offering to sell them a monument.  Reputable dealers neither solicit on the telephone nor contact families who are still mourning the loss of a loved one.
