Your gift to the appeal helps in so many ways…
• Catholic Charities, one of the state's oldest community service agencies, operates 25 sites throughout Essex, Hudson Union, and Bergen counties and handles more than 60,000 cases annually without regard to the clients' religion, race, color, sex, age or ability to pay. Working with local, state and federal agencies, the Bishop Francis Center for Immigration Services has rescued dozens of human trafficking victims - giving hope and dignity to those that have nowhere else to turn for assistance. Enrollment in the special education programs continues to rise, with 205 students in four schools, including an autistic program to meet the educational needs of this growing population among the urban poor. It provides shelter for thousands of homeless men, women and children. Senior citizens benefit from the agency's elder care center, food shopping program and referral services. The agency's help is available for the very young to the elderly.
• In 2007, The Archdiocese of Newark led the nation for the second consecutive year with the largest ordination class of 13 men. Providing the necessary resources for our Seminaries is a top priority.
• All two hundred and twenty-six parishes in our Archdiocese can share in the funds collected by the Appeal. Many parishes have come to depend on the rebate for their own operational budgets, and some parishes, in good financial shape, voluntarily donate their rebates to needy parishes. Financially impacted parishes benefit from subsidies funded by the appeal. Thanks to your generosity our churches remain beacons of hope for the community.
• The Pastoral Ministry with the Deaf provides the spiritual and social-service needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing clients and their families.
• Our retired priests receive proper medical care and housing. Even in retirement, those in good health continue their ministry of service.
• The Youth and Young Adult Services provides opportunities for our youth to live their faith through retreats and opportunities of service. It offers a wholesome Christian environment in social functions that bring the energy and goodness of youth together.
• One hundred and thirty-eight schools provide a faith-based and value-centered education to 44,497 students. In the Fall of 2007, the Cristo Rey school opened in Newark - ready to prepare tomorrow's leaders. It is the first school to open in our archdiocese since 1964.
This chart represents the total subsidy for the services/programs listed above. The AAA funds nearly 65 percent of the budget shown above. Other resources, such as parish assessments, fund the remaining balance.
The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal rebate received by parishes that exceeded their AAA goal and funds raised through the AAA designated for Seton Hall University are included in the “Parishes and Schools”.
Catholic Charities and Youth Ministry are additionally funded through other resources.
** All funds received for the 2008 AAA will be applied to fiscal year 2008-09
