SHU Evening of Roses

The 20th anniversary of the Sister Rose Thering Fund (SRTF) at Seton Hall University was celebrated April 21 at the annual Evening of Roses event, honoring the late Sister Rose and those who work to expand and foster the relationship between Jews and Christians in conjunction with understanding through education and inter-religious cooperation.



Benedictine Academy honored with Jefferson Award

Benedictine Academy, Elizabeth, was tapped nationally as the highest ranking Jefferson Award Ambassador Gold Medal High School. Special note was made of student efforts to fight human trafficking. In June Benedictine Academy students will travel to Washington, DC to the Jefferson Awards National Ceremony.



Tobin to discuss his book at Union Library

The Union Public Library presents distinguished author Greg Tobin in a discussion of his latest book, The Good Pope: The Making of a Saint and the Remaking of the Church, a biography of Pope John XXIII on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend this admission-free event.



'Suddenly Seymour'

Paramus Catholic Regional High School students entertained audiences the spring performance of the hit Broadway musical, “Little Shop of Horrors.” About 700 people attended the performances, which were held in the school auditorium May 3-5.



Immaculate Heart Academy summer programs

Washington Township -- Immaculate Heart Academy, 500 Van Emburg Ave., will host various summer enrichment courses and workshops through its popular Summer@TheAcademy program. Courses are open to both boys and girls of various age levels.



Father Fugee releases statement

NEWARK—On May 2, Fr. Michael Fugee, a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark, wrote the following to the Most Rev. John J. Myers, Archbishop of Newark: “For the good of the Church and for my peace, I have requested permission to leave public exercise of my priestly ministry.”



Eight men to be ordained May 25

NEWARK—Representing a vibrant cross-section of the Catholic Faith, eight men will be ordained to the priesthood for service to the Church of Newark on Saturday, May 25, at 10 a.m.



Memorial Day masses 2013

AREA—The Catholic Cemeteries Office of the Archdiocese of Newark will host the annual outdoor Memorial Day masses (Monday, May 27) at archdiocesan cemeteries located throughout northern New Jersey.



CARA survey of new priests

WASHINGTON—The median age of men ordained to the priesthood in 2013 is 32, two-thirds are Caucasian, and 26 percent carry educational debt. These figures stand out in The Class of 2013: Survey of Ordinands to the Priesthood, the annual national survey of men being ordained priests for U.S. dioceses and religious communities. The study was conducted by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA), a Georgetown University-based research center.



ICHS student goes green

NEWARK—Isaiah Arrington of Newark, a freshman at Immaculate Conception High School (ICHS), Montclair, last month worked with his Student Partner Alliance (S/PA) mentor, Alex MacKenzie, to revitalize a garden in downtown Newark, part of the Greater Newark Conservancy (http://www.citybloom.org).
