Archdiocesan African American Deacons

African American Deacons serving the Archdiocese of Newark:

e are called to work in liturgical service, teaching and catechesis, and in the service of charity in communion with the bishop.

In the Archdiocese of Newark, there are 9 African American permanent deacons.  Some of the ordained men have been deacons for over 20 years.

We serve as sacramental ministers who can baptize, perform marriages, officiate at funerals, engage in pastoral care, proclaim the Holy Word and preach at Mass, and preside at communion services.
