Priests, Sisters and Brothers celebrate their commitment to religious life Priests and Religious sisters and brothers from throughout the Archdiocese of Newark will gather Wednesday, February 2, 2000, at 7:30 p.m. in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, 89 Ridge St., in Newark, to celebrate their commitment to religious life. The annual celebration of "Consecrated Life," referring to the consecration of these individuals to religious orders or the priesthood, is observed throughout the world at the request of the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II. In announcing this special prayer service, Archbishop Theodore E. McCarrick, Archbishop of Newark, said, "All those in consecrated life, living or serving in our parishes, as well as their friends and relatives and the staff members of the parishes are being invited to the evening prayer service in the Cathedral Basilica." He added, "It is my hope that every congregation of Priests, Brothers and Sisters, as well as Consecrated Virgins and members of the secular institutes who are now serving, or who have served in the past, will be present to praise God for the great gift of Consecrated Life." Sister of Charity Thomas Mary Salerno, Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Newark and Delegate for Religious, is coordinating the event. She noted that the event will draw Catholics from Bergen, Essex, Hudson and Union counties "to give thanks" for the lives and ministry of those in religious life; and "to ask God to send more men and women to serve Him in this way of life."
