Stations
of the Cross
Archbishop
Theodore E. McCarrick recently joined the Choir of Sacred Heart
Cathedral Basilica in recording "The Stations of the Cross: Meditations
of Pope John Paul II." The cassette recording is a response to the
many requests made by people who have gathered at the Cathedral
Basilica of the Sacred Heart on Good Fridays and who wished to own
a recorded version of the ceremony.
The centuries
old tradition of the Stations of the Cross consists of fourteen
reflections on the journey of Christ from the time He was condemned
to death, to His being placed in the tomb after His crucifixion.
Along the way, tradition holds that Jesus fell several times, met
His mother, was helped by Simon, was ultimately crucified between
two thieves, and then taken down from the cross and buried.
For over
a decade people have gathered at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred
Heart in Newark for a special version of the Stations of the Cross.
Archbishop McCarrick recites the words written by Pope John Paul
II as the choir responds to each of the fourteen stations with an
appropriate musical piece from throughout history.
Director
of Music for the Archdiocese of Newark, David E. Fedor, said that
this recording combines poetic and musical expressions of the Catholic
faith as well as providing a window to the mystery of God's love.
"Archbishop McCarrick's sensitive rendering of the text contributed
greatly to the success of this project," he said, "we are deeply
grateful for his support."
