Cathedral
Basilica: New Jersey's Other Performing Arts Center
Performers
and music lovers will once again fill the Cathedral Basilica of
the Sacred Heart in Newark for a concert series that has rivaled
New Jersey's top performing arts centers for thirteen years. The
Ridgewood Concert Band will join the Pro-Arte Chorale at 4 p.m.
Sunday, March 14, 1999 at the Cathedral Basilica, located on the
corner of Clifton and Park Avenues.
The Ridgewood
Concert Band, conducted by Christian Wiljelm and the Pro-Arte Chorale,
conducted by David Crone, will provide the audience with "a thrilling
concert," according to Cathedral Music Director and Organist John
J. Miller.
The program
will consist of mostly American music, including two sets of Walt
Whitman songs along with music of Aaron Copland, Vincent Perichetti
and a newly-commissioned piece for chorus and winds by Godfrey Schroth.
Other favorites on the program will be "Solemn Entry" of Richard
Strauss and "Polka and Fugue" by Jaromir Weinberger.
The Cathedral
Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, NJ, has been the center
of worship for New Jersey Catholics since before it was completed
in 1953. In 1987, the Cathedral Basilica took on a new role in Newark
as sponsor of the Cathedral Concert Series. Suggested donation for
this month's concert is $10. For more information on this or any
other Concert Series performance, call or e-mail the Cathedral Music
Office at (973) 484-2400.
