ARCHBISHOP ISSUES DISPENSATION FROM LENTEN OBLIGATION FOR FRIDAY, MARCH 17, 2000 FEAST OF ST. PATRICK This year, the feast of St. Patrick - March 17, 2000 - falls on a Friday during the season of Lent. After having given consideration to this matter, Archbishop Theodore E. McCarrick has granted a dispensation from the law of the Church regarding abstinence from meat on Friday, March 17, 2000. Catholics in the Archdiocese of Newark who wish to partake in this dispensation are reminded that the Church highly encourages that they substitute some other act of penance, such as prayer, works of piety or charity, in its place.
