

Catholic and Jewish Educators go Teacher-to-Teacher at 12th Annual Conference The twelfth annual Teacher-to-Teacher Conference for Catholic and Jewish Educators, will be held Tuesday, April 4, 2000, 6- 9 p.m., at the Congregation B'nai Jeshrun, 1025 South Orange Ave., Short Hills. The forum presents Catholic and Jewish educators in New Jersey with a special opportunity to meet on an informal basis to discuss the challenges of relating recent historical and religious events into the context of their present teachings. The conference theme is Homeland and Holy Land... What does Israel mean to Catholics and to Jews? Rabbi A. James Rudin, National Director of Interreligious Affairs American Jewish Committee, will be the keynote speaker. Having worked with leaders of different religious denominations, Rabbi Rudin promotes a greater understanding of Jews and Judaism, as well as good relations among people of all races and creeds. He has participated in meetings with Pope John Paul II and during this past month was part of the papal delegation in Israel. Msgr. John J. Gilchrist, Chairman of the Archdiocese of Newark Commission of Interreligious Affairs and member of the 2000 Conference Planning Committee said, "This is the fruit of 35 years of dialogue. It is everything the church could hope for, Catholic and Jewish teachers sitting down together and sharing" The conference will also feature a prayer service led by 2000 Conference Planning Committee Chairpersons, Martin Arsenault, Pastoral Associate for Catechetics, St. Michael's Religious Education, Cranford, and David Iskovitz, Director of Education, Temple B'nai Or, Morristown, and will include traditional Catholic and Jewish song. Over 100 Catholic and Jewish religious educators are expected to attend this year's conference sponsored by the Metropolitan New Jersey Chapter of the American Jewish Committee, Department of Catechetics of the Archdiocese, the Interreligious Commission of the Archdiocese and the Jewish Education Association of the United Jewish Federation of MetroWest.
