of Newark to Celebrate 50th Anniversary of Bishop David Arias Bishop Arias is the Regional Bishop of Hudson County and the Vicar for Hispanic Affairs. He serves more than 300,000 Spanish-speaking Catholics in Bergen, Essex, Hudson and Union counties as Vicar for Hispanic Affairs. Bishop Arias was born in the Spanish province of León and was ordained to the priesthood in Barcelona to the Order of Augustinian Recollects. He came to American soil in 1953, serving first as founding pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Mexico City; Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Fabens, Texas; St. Mary's Parish, Marfa, Texas; and again at Our Lady of Lourdes, Mexico City. He was the Director of the Spanish Apostolate in New York before coming to the Newark Archdiocese and was the Vicar Provincial for the Augustinian Recollects in the U.S. The Bishop has been active and provided leadership to both the Cursillo and Marriage Encounter movements. Pope John Paul II named Bishop Arias an auxiliary bishop of the Newark Archdiocese in 1983. His Episcopal Ordination took place at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart on April 7, 1983. Bishop Arias is the author of Luz y Vida (Light and Life), Biblical Dialogues, a Research Study on the Pastoral and Social Situation of Hispanics of Northern New Jersey, and Spanish Roots of America, a book retracing the presence of Spain in the New World. He is also the author of numerous articles in religious and secular newspapers and magazines.
