Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., the Archbishop of Newark, will deliver a special Lenten reflection at the Saint Walburga Monastery of the Benedictine Sisters of Elizabeth on Sunday, February 25, as part of the celebration of the community’s 150 years of service to and among the people of Elizabeth.

The Archdiocese of Newark has a long tradition of honoring with a special liturgy those couples in the Archdiocese celebrating 5, 25 or 50 years or more of Christian Marriage. These annual liturgies take place in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the mother church of the Archdiocese.

The Catholic Men’s Commission is celebrating its tenth annual Men’s Conference on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Seton Hall University. The daylong prayerful event is expected to attract thousands of attendees seeking to strengthen their spiritual faith, and engage in fellowship. All men from the Archdiocese of Newark, as well as neighboring Dioceses, are invited to attend.

The Women’s Commission is celebrating its annual 2018 Day of Reflection on Saturday, March 3, at Seton Hall University. The daylong prayerful event, which is expected to attract thousands of attendees, asks women to become “Alive in Christ,” while renewing the values of the Catholic family. Women in the Archdiocese of Newark, as well as neighboring Dioceses, are all invited.

Cardinal Joseph William Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, will mark the beginning of Lent 2018 with the celebration of Mass and distribution of Ashes at St. Patrick’s Pro-Cathedral in downtown Newark on Wednesday, February 14, beginning at 12:15 p.m.

The 8th Annual Catholic DeaFest will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at the Archdiocesan Youth Center in Kearny. The DeaFest will begin at 9 am, and includes free admission and lunch. The event is sponsored by the NJ Pastoral Workers with the Deaf: Archdiocese of Newark, Dioceses of Camden, Metuchen and Paterson.

Over many decades, the Catholic Bishops of New Jersey consistently called for the abolishment of the death penalty. Thank God, on December 17, 2007, New Jersey became the first state in forty years to enact a law to eliminate the death penalty. Groups across the globe hailed the enactment of New Jersey’s law as a victory for the dignity of life.

Throughout my pastoral visits and deanery town hall gatherings that have taken place this year, one topic has come up in every meeting — your concern for the future of Catholic Education in the Archdiocese. It is a concern I share as well. My siblings and I are products of Catholic schools. I served in parishes with Catholic schools as a parish priest and pastor.
