Annual Memorial Day Masses will be Celebrated at Archdiocesan Cemeteries

The Archdiocese of Newark will celebrate the Annual Memorial Day on Monday, May 28, 2001 at 11:00 A.M in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington; St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia; Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City; Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover; Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, East Orange.

Formerly known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day started in 1868 to honor the Civil War dead. It became a national holiday in 1971 to commemorate all war dead.

The following is a list of who will be celebrating Mass at each of the Archdiocesan cemeteries:

Most Rev. Paul G. Bootkoski will be the Main Celebrant as well as the Homilist at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Most Rev. Dominic A. Marconi will be the Main Celebrant, with Rev. Benedict M. Worry, O.S.B., of St. Elizabeth of Hungary in Linden, serving as the Homilist at St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia.

Most Rev. David Arias will be the Main Celebrant, with Very Rev. Victor P. Kennedy, V.F. of St. AnneÕs, Jersey City, serving as the Homilist at Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City.

Most Rev. Arthur Serratelli will be the Main Celebrant as well as Homilist at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.

Very Rev. Paul D. Schetelick of Sacred Heart, Newark (Vailsburg), will be the Main Celebrant as well as the Homilist at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, East Orange.
