Statement of Archbishop Theodore E. McCarrick on the Appointment of Edward M. Egan as Archbishop of New York

The appointment of Edward Egan as Archbishop of New York is wonderful news indeed. Archbishop Egan will be a strong and dynamic leader and he brings many priestly gifts and talents to this challenging responsibility. His mission of energetic and caring pastoral leadership of the Church of Bridgeport has well prepared him for the leadership of this most important American Diocese, where he will be a worthy successor to Cardinal O'Connor and Cardinal Cooke.

He has been a friend for many years, and I welcome him joyfully as our neighbor across the Hudson River. He can always count on the prayers and support of the Archdiocese of Newark.
