Jewish Prophets to Christian Apostles:
How Preaching brought Scripture to the Masses

The Department of Jewish-Christian Studies of Seton Hall University has paired a Catholic Priest and a Jewish Rabbi to teach a course on preaching in the synagogue and early Church. The two-week course, "The Art and Dynamics of Preaching in the Synagogue and Early Church," will be taught from June 21 to 24 and June 28 to July 1, 1999 at the Seton Hall University campus in South Orange, NJ.

Rabbi Asher Finkel, PhD, a scripture expert, will lecture during the morning sessions from 9:30 a.m. to noon. He will examine how preaching became the most effective setting for thereception of the Scriptures in the public religious forum of the community. Rabbi Finkel's scholarly review covers the development from prophet and Temple to teacher and synagogue or apostle on his mission, with reference to early rabbinic Midrash and Targum, early Christian texts, and the Greco-Roman world.

Fr. Lawrence Frizzell, Director of the Jewish Christian Studies department, will lecture during the afternoon sessions from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. He will review the effects of the principles of Jewish preaching on the Early Christian community. The discussions will focus on the positive application of the Gospel message and grapple with the anti-Jewish motifs found in many texts.

Priests could gain a broader perspective on the role of preaching in the community. According to Fr. Frizzell, if a priest can understand how Jesus taught, how Church fathers developed scripture and how the apostles utilized preaching then they can apply it to their daily lives.

"The Art and Dynamics of Preaching in the Synagogue and Early Church" is a three credit course or $300 to audit it. Qualified Catholic clergy and religious are eligible for a 50 percent reduction in tuition. Registration must be received by June 10, 1999. For more information contact Rev. Lawrence E. Frizzell, Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ 07079 or call (973) 761 -9751.
