Archbishop ordains 11 new priests Archbishop of Newark Theodore E. McCarrick will ordain eleven men to the priesthood at 10 a.m. on Saturday May 27, 1999 at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, 89 Ridge St., Newark. According to the United States Catholic Conference, the Newark Archdiocese is once again the largest ordination class in the country. The Archdiocese of St. Paul- Minneapolis follows with nine men. With this class, the Archbishop will have ordained more than 220 seminarians to the priesthood since he became a bishop in 1981. Three of the newly ordained priests attended Immaculate Conception Seminary on Seton Hall University's South Orange campus. The remaining eight attended Redemptoris Mater, the Archdiocese's missionary Seminary in Kearny that provides formation to many foreign-born seminarians. Of the eleven men to be ordained in the Archdiocese of Newark this year, 10 are foreign born. Their homes include Colombia, England, Ireland, Italy, Paraguay, Philippines, Poland, Romania, and Spain. According to a national survey of newly ordained men, which the National Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on Vocations will soon release, this class of ordinands nationally reflects both a wide ethnic variety and the influence of Catholic schools. The diversity of the Newark class of ordinands mirrors the ethnic and national diversity, with new priests from Eastern and Western Europe, Central and South America and Asia.
