Archbishop McCarrick to Ordain 14 Men to the Priesthood

The Most Reverend Theodore E. McCarrick, Archbishop of Newark, will ordain fourteen men to the priesthood on Saturday, May 24, 1997 at 10 am in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark.

The Archbishop has ordained over 200 seminarians to the priesthood since becoming a bishop in 1981. The Archdiocese of Newark is a leader among US dioceses for the number of priests ordained in the last decade. 

The procession is at 9:45 am in the Cathedral Basilica and at 10 am the Archbishop will confer the Sacrament of Holy Orders. The men being ordained have completed their theological studies at Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall University, South Orange. 

Many of the new priests will celebrate their first mass the following day, Sunday, May 25, 1997 in churches throughout the Archdiocese.

Archbishop McCarrick is overjoyed that those being ordained have heard God's call and responded to it with a "generosity that is not based on worldly prudence but on faith, and faith is the foundation of all that is good," he said.

Biographies of New Priests: 

Rev. James T. Brown
Father Brown, 30, who was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., is the son of Thomas E. and Jessie V. Brown. Fr. Brown attended the University of Scranton, St. Pius X Seminary and Mary Immaculate Seminary in Northampton, Pa., before completing his studies for the priesthood at Immaculate Conception Seminary, where he earned a master of divinity degree. 

Prior to entering the seminary, Fr. Brown worked as a salesman for Eddy Leon Chocolate Co. in Moosic, Pa. and as a pastoral minister/youth minister at Church of the Nativity of Our Lady, Burke, Va. 

Father Brown will celebrate his first Mass on May 25 at 2 p.m. at St. Patrick's Church, White Haven, Pa. 

Rev. Steven D. D'Andrea
Father D'Andrea, 31, was born in Newark and is the son of David and Rosalie D'Andrea. His home parish is St. Francis Xavier, Newark. He attended Seton Hall University School of Business before studying for the priesthood at Immaculate Conception Seminary. 

Father D'Andrea will celebrate his first Mass on May 25 at 3:30 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church, Newark.

Rev. Patrick R. Flannery
Father Flannery, 41, was born in Teaneck and is the son of John J. and Loretta E. Flannery. 

He earned a bachelor of science degree in marketing/management from Montclair State University. He studied for the priesthood at Immaculate Conception Seminary, where he earned a master of divinity degree. 

Prior to entering the seminary, Father Flannery worked as a manager at Tele charge for the Shubert Organization in New York and as an accounting specialist with Apex Trucking Co., Inc., in Secaucus.

Father Flannery will celebrate his first Mass on May 25 at 5 p.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Hoboken.

Rev. Carlos Flor
Father Flor, was born in Villena, Alicante, Spain and he is the son of Carlos and Maria del Carmen Flor. He studied medicine for six years at the School of Medicine at the Universities of Alicante and Murcia in Spain. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in religious studies from Seton Hall University and a master of divinity degree from Immaculate Conception Seminary. While attending the seminary, he resided at Redemptoris Mater Archdiocesan Missionary Seminary in Kearny. 

Father Flor will celebrate his first Mass on May 25 at 11:15 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Union City. 

Rev. Paulo Frade
Father Frade, 32, was born in Itaquaquecetuba, Sao Paulo, Brazil and he is the son of Adelino dos Santos Frade and D. Ludovina Pacheco. He earned a degree in geography at UMC - Universidade de Mogi das Cruzes in Sao Paulo, Brazil. 

Father Frade studied for the priesthood at Immaculate Conception Seminary, where he earned a master of divinity degree. While studying at the seminary, he resided at Redemptoris Mater. 

Prior to his studies for the priesthood, Father Frade worked in sales, taught geography in public schools, and participated in missionary activities in Brazil. 

Father Frade will celebrate his first Mass on May 25 at the 9 a.m. Portuguese Mass at Holy Cross Church, Harrison. 

Rev. Donald P. Gleeson
Father Gleeson, 31, was born in the Bronx, N.Y. and is the son of Donald and Eileen Gleeson. His home parish is St. Catherine of Siena, Cedar Grove. He earned a bachelor of science degree in athletic administration from St. John's University, Jamaica, N.Y. He studied for the priesthood at Immaculate Conception Seminary. 

Prior to his studies for the priesthood, Father Gleeson worked in the marketing department of the New Jersey Devils hockey team.

Father Gleeson will celebrate his first Mass on May 25 at 2 p.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Cedar Grove.

Rev. Robert M. Hoatson
Father Hoatson, 45, was born in Orange and raised in West Orange. He is the son of Archie and Patricia Hoatson. Father Hoatson earned a bachelor of arts in English from Iona College, New Rochelle, N.Y., a master of arts degree in English from Manhattan College, the Bronx, N.Y., and a Ph.D. in educational administration from Fordham University. He studied for the priesthood at Immaculate Conception Seminary. 

Prior to his studies for the priesthood, Father Hoatson served as a Christian Brother for 24 years and worked as a teacher, principal, university dean, publishing company executive and college basketball official.

Father Hoatson will celebrate his first Mass on May 25 at 2 p.m. at St. Raphael's Church, Livingston. 

Rev. William A. Lusik
Father Lusik, 31, was born in New York. He is the son of Raeann M. Lusik and the late William Lusik. Father Lusik earned a bachelor of arts degree in religious studies from Manhattan College, where he belonged to the Manhattan College Honor Society (Epsilon Sigma Pi) and Theta Alpha Kappa (National Honor Society of Theological and Religious Studies.) He also had a heavy concentration in mathematics and computer science. 

Prior to studying for the priesthood at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Father Lusik worked for the City of New York and as a counselor for Covenant House in both New York and Houston. 

Father Lusik will celebrate his first Mass on May 25 at noon at St. John the Baptist Church, Hillsdale. 
 

Rev. Matthew Pawlikowski
Father Pawlikowski, 33, was born in Jersey City. He is the son of Rita Pawlikowski and the late John Pawlikowski. His home parish is Immaculate Conception, Secaucus. Father Pawlikowski earned a bachelor of science degree in foreign area studies in the Soviet Union from the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. 

Prior to studying for the priesthood at Immaculate Conception Seminary, he served as an active duty infantry officer in the U.S. Army, holding leadership and staff positions in Korea; Germany; Ft. Benning, Ga.; Ft. Sill, OK; and Ft. Bragg, N.C. 

Father Pawlikowski will celebrate his first Mass on May 24 at 5:15 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Secaucus. On May 25, he will celebrate a Mass at 12:15 p.m. at St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Church, Linden. 

Rev. Raymond E. Rodrigue
Father Rodrigue, 39, was born in Moses Lake, Wash. He is the son of Raymond O. and Mary Kathleen Rodrigue. He studied pre-med at the University of Notre Dame, wildlife biology at the University of Idaho, and earned a teaching certification from Johnson State College. He studied for the priesthood at Immaculate Conception Seminary, where he earned a master of divinity degree. 

Prior to entering the seminary, Father Rodrigue worked as a wildlife biologist, a high school science and math teacher, and a district agent for Prudential Insurance Co. 

Father Rodrigue will celebrate his first Mass on May 24 at 7:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Kearny. Concelebrants will be Holy Cross Father Edward O'Connor, his uncle, and Father John Mary Foster, his cousin.

Rev. James Teti
Father Teti, 26, was born in Summit and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent E. Teti. He grew up in Maplewood and Mendham. 

Father Teti earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science from Yale University, New Haven, Conn. He studied for the priesthood at the Pontifical North American College, Vatican City, and received a baccalaureate in sacred theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome. Father Teti is currently working toward a license in sacred theology with a specialization in fundamental theology from the Gregorian University.

Father Teti will celebrate his first Mass on May 25 in St. Mary's Abbey Church, Delbarton, Morristown.

Rev. Marc A. Vicari
Father Vicari, 30, who was born in Newark, is the son of Salvatore and Marcia Vicari. His home parish is St. Anne's, Garwood.

Father Vicari earned a bachelor of arts degree in English from Seton Hall University. He studied for the priesthood at Immaculate Conception Seminary. Prior to entering the seminary, he worked in sales and education. 

Father Vicari will celebrate his first Mass on May 25 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Anne's Church, Garwood. 

Rev. Michael G. Ward
Father Ward, 32, was born in Elizabeth. He is the son of Dorothy Ward and the late William Ward. 

Fr. Ward earned a bachelor of arts degree in biology from Drew University, Madison. He studied for the priesthood at Immaculate Conception Seminary. Prior to entering the seminary, he worked for Merrill Lynch in New York. 

Father Ward will celebrate his first Mass on May 25 at noon at Holy Trinity Church, Westfield. 

Rev. John E. Wassell
Father Wassell, 46, who was born in Nanticoke, Pa., is the son of Edward T. And Pauline Anne Wassell. 

Father Wassell earned a bachelor of science degree in engineering physics from Cornell University. He studied for the priesthood at Immaculate Conception Seminary, where he earned a master of divinity degree. 

Prior to entering the seminary, he worked as an engineer for Raytheon Corp., a house parent in a group home for boys, a salesman for Christian Jewelers, a lay missioner in Mexico and in Hispanic outreach/fundraising for Good Counsel Homes for pregnant women. 

Father Wassell will celebrate his first Mass on May 25 at noon at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Newark.
