Archbishop
McCarrick to Ordain 14 Men to the Priesthood
The Most
Reverend Theodore E. McCarrick, Archbishop of Newark, will ordain
fourteen men to the priesthood on Saturday, May 24, 1997 at 10 am
in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark.
The Archbishop
has ordained over 200 seminarians to the priesthood since becoming
a bishop in 1981. The Archdiocese of Newark is a leader among US
dioceses for the number of priests ordained in the last decade.
The procession
is at 9:45 am in the Cathedral Basilica and at 10 am the Archbishop
will confer the Sacrament of Holy Orders. The men being ordained
have completed their theological studies at Immaculate Conception
Seminary at Seton Hall University, South Orange.
Many of
the new priests will celebrate their first mass the following day,
Sunday, May 25, 1997 in churches throughout the Archdiocese.
Archbishop
McCarrick is overjoyed that those being ordained have heard God's
call and responded to it with a "generosity that is not based on
worldly prudence but on faith, and faith is the foundation of all
that is good," he said.
