New Jersey Catholic Students Make a Run for Education
Schering-Plough to Sponsor Races
The NJ Catholic School Track Conference will host the inaugural NJ Catholic Grammar School Relays, Monday, June 3, 2002, 6:15- 9:30 p.m., at Kean University, Union. Open to teams from New Jersey Catholic grammar schools, proceeds raised by the meet will go to the Archdiocese of Newark’s Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children. Schering-Plough Corporation is sponsoring the relay races in support of the Scholarship Fund and the students it assists.

To date, teams from 14 Catholic Schools in Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Union and Sussex counties have registered to participate in Kids Running for Kids. Registration for individual students or relay teams can be submitted to Relay Meet Director, Bill Fitzpatrick until May 31.

The event will feature 4 x 100-meter relay competitions for boys and girls from third through eighth grades as well as invitational 1600 and 800-meter races for boys and girls. The meet will begin with all-comers fun runs by grade.

This Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children provides scholarships for needy children who attend Catholic and private elementary and secondary schools in Essex, Hudson, Bergen, and Union counties. The Fund is neither a religious nor a sectarian organization, more than half of the scholarship recipients are non-Catholic.

Since its inception in 1983, the Scholarship Fund has awarded over $14.5 million in assistance to more than 31,000 recipients. During the 2001-2002 school year, more than 2,000 students received a total of $2.2 million in tuition assistance.
