Archdiocese of Newark co-sponsors conference on spirituality & justice

Ministers and adults from the Archdiocese of Newark and the Dioceses of Metuchen, Paterson and Trenton will be examining the question "Have you ever pondered what God might do in the world through the use of your hands?" during Called by God, Driven by Hope, a conference on spirituality and justice, to be held Saturday, June 24, 2000, at the Douglass Student Center, Nichol Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ, 9 a.m.- 4:45 p.m.

People of all faiths are encouraged to attend this day of prayer, spirituality and growth towards being a more just and peaceful person. Sponsored by the four participating dioceses, attendees of the daylong event will be divided into two different programs: Track I- Adult, or Track II- Youth.

Keynote speaker Jim McGinnis, Director of Programming for the Institute for Peace and Justice in St. Louis, MO, will lead the activities that focus on the theme "Gathered by God's Word" during the Track- I morning session. The afternoon Adult program will offer four workshops focusing on "Sent Forth by God's Word." They are: Weaving Justice and Peace Ministry Throughout Parish Life; Charity & Justice Through Legislative Advocacy; Jubilee Families and Communities: Living the Pledge for Non-Violence; and The Essentials of Social Justice Ministry with Youth and Young Adult.

Designed for high school aged teenagers, Track II, the Youth Program, will be led by David O'Brien, Director of Youth Ministry, Evangelization and Social Justice in the Archdiocese of Newark, and Patricia Slater, Director of the Romero Center in Camden. The day will include a morning of service learning, and an afternoon of retreat activities centered on service.

Sr. Anne Curtis, RSM, is an educator and lobbyist with network, a Catholic Social Justice Lobby. She lobbies Congress to influence the formation of federal legislation to promote economic and social justice. She will be presenting Workshop B- Charity & Justice Through Legislative Advocacy, with a colleague from Network.

Joanna DePasquale Parent is the Director of Young Adult Ministry in the Archdiocese of Newark. As Associate Catholic Campus Minister at William Paterson University, she coordinated outreach programs which engaged young adults in social justice ministry. Joanne received a Master's Degree in Pastoral Ministry from Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall University. She will be presenting Workshop D- The Essentials of Social Justice Ministry with Youth and Young Adult.

Suzy R. Eyler is the Co-founder of Mary's Vineyard, Inc., a spiritual, wellness and education center in Cherry Hill, NJ. Suzy received certification in spiritual direction from Neumann College and a Master's Degree in Theology from the University of Dayton. She has 28 years experience as a teacher of elementary and high school students and adults. She will be presenting Workshop D- The Essentials of Social Justice Ministry with Youth and Young Adult.

Jim McGinnis is the Director of Programming for the Institute for Peace and Justice in St. Louis, MO. Jim is a retreat directors, lecturer and author of numerous books and articles. He is an occasional faculty/resource person at Boston College, Loyola University, the Presbyterian School of Christian Education, Kanuga and Star Island. As a peace educator, he consults with many Roman Catholic dioceses, school offices and family life programs. Jim is married and the father of three young adults. He is the founder and along with his wife, Kathleen, co-coordinator of the Parenting for Peace and Justice Network. He will be the keynote speaker at the Adult Program morning session and will present Workshop C- Jubilee Families and Communities: Living the Pledge for Non-Violence.

David O'Brien is the Director of Youth Ministry, Evangelization and Social Justice in the Archdiocese of Newark. David graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Master's in Divinity. He served as a Catholic lay missionary to youth with the National Evangelism Team (N/E/T.) and participated in more than 1,000 retreats for teens, ministering to nearly 10,000 youths in the U.S, Canada and Honduras. He will be leading the Track II Youth Program.

Joan Rosenhauser is the Special Projects Coordinator for the Social Development and World Peace Department of the US Catholic Conference. She will be presenting Workshop A- Weaving Justice and Peace Ministry Throughout Parish Life.

Patricia Slater is the Director of the Romero Center in Camden, an urban retreat and social justice education center. Patricia has 19 years experience as a high school teacher, high school and college campus minister. She will be leading the Track II Youth Program.
