Math Academy 2000 "The Journey In Excellence Continues"

Session III of Math Academy 2000, a math educators' conference sponsored by the Archdiocese of Newark Schools Office, will be held at Paramus Catholic Regional High School, 425 Paramus Road, Paramus, on Thursday, June 22, 2000. Archdiocesan Associate Superintendent for Curriculum and Testing, Sister Louise Cababe, OP, Ph.D., who is serving as director of Math Academy, announced that the program would be open to elementary and secondary school mathematics teachers and administrators from the Newark Archdiocese and Paterson Diocese.

Father Paul Manning, Ph.D., from Oratory Preparatory School, Summit, NJ will deliver the keynote address on the topic of the newly released National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards 2000.

Associate Superintendents Sr. Eugene Fiorino, OSF of the Camden Diocese and Sr. Joseph Spring, SCC of the Paterson Diocese will present an overview of the first State-Wide Mathematics Curriculum for Catholic elementary schools
(K-8). Brother Ramos, CFC, Associate Superintendent from the Diocese of Metuchen, will introduce an overview of the draft for High School Algebra I Curriculum Guideline.

June 22 is the third Session in the series that began in June 1999 with a three day, state-wide conference held at two sites, Seton Hall and St. Rose HS in Belmar, where over 800 participated. Session II of the Academy was held in March at Seton Hall.

Sister Cababe said, "The past two conferences have been overwhelming successes. A great deal of enthusiasm has been generated and teachers are gaining new methodology and insights into the teaching of mathematics. Math is one of the essentials needed for this new millennium. We want our Catholic school students to be not only fully grounded in the essentials of our Catholic teachings, traditions and values, but prepared for the work world too."
