Priest in the Military Services Receives Papal Honors A 1967 graduate of the Immaculate Conception Seminary in Darlington, NJ, then Rev. Newlands first assignment was to St. Aloysius parish in Caldwell, NJ. During his five years there he served as general science instructor at the elementary school, and was a member of the Archdiocesan Commission for Sacred Music. In 1972, he was assigned to St. Joseph of the Palisades, West New York, where he served as vice principal of the parish high school, and as an adjunct instructor at St. Peter's College in Jersey City. Rev. Newland was assigned in 1977 to the Church of the Assumption in Emerson. In June 1978, he was released for active duty military service as a chaplain in the United States Air Force. During his 22 years on active duty he served in 13 assignments including five overseas tours in South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Turkey and England. He graduated from the Air War College resident program in June 1993. He served on the Command Chaplain's staff at the Air Education and Training Command where he oversaw the assignment of chaplain service personnel. His last duty assignment was at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, where he was the Senior Chaplain of a staff of 11 active duty chaplains, 4 Reserve chaplains and 8 enlisted personnel. He retired from active duty in the grade of Colonel in August 2000. He was then appointed to the staff of the Archdiocese for the Military Services in Washington DC, the endorsing agent for all Catholic Chaplains, where Archbishop Edwin OBrien appointed Msgr. Newland Chancellor. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit and the Meritorious Service Medal with 8 Oak Leaf Clusters. A date for the formal investiture of Msgr. Newland has yet to be announced.
