Archdiocese
of Newark Co-Sponsors First "Math Academy"
Over 750
elementary and secondary Catholic school teachers and administrators
from the five arch/dioceses of New Jersey will gather for the first
statewide "Math Academy" Conference on June 23, 24 and 25 1999,
held simultaneously at two different locations, Seton Hall University,
South Orange and at St. Rose High School, Belmar.
This three
day conference, sponsored by the Council of Catholic School Superintendents
of the State of New Jersey, offers mathematical reform through hands
on activities and strategies for motivational teaching. The Academy
aims to improve Mathematical achievements among students in elementary
and secondary Catholic schools.
"The Math
Academy will provide challenging opportunities for our schools to
network so that the teaching/ learning environment animates all
shareholders" within our Catholic Schools and throughout the State,
says Sr.Dominica Rocchio, SC, Ed.D., Secretary of Education and
Superintendent of Schools, Archdiocese of Newark.
There
will be over 135 break out sessions addressing topics such as: Manipulatives
in the Middle Grades, Integrating Problem Solving, Technology Applications,
Algebra, Calculus, and Estimation Strategies. Of the Archdiocese
of Newark's 140 Catholic elementary and secondary schools, over
325 Math Teachers, Department Chairs, Curriculum Coordinators, and
Principals will participate.
"Participants
can expect to be treated to many challenging and stimulating presentations
to further develop mathematical awareness and strengthen their base
of knowledge in the teaching and learning of mathematics," says
Sr. Louise Cababe, O.P., Ph.D., Assistant Superintendent of Schools,
Archdiocese of Newark.
The Academy
is content intensive and provides teaching strategies rooted in
the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards
and New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJCCS).
There
will be a variety of vendors providing the latest information about
commercially produced Math materials. Each participant will receive
a binder filled with valuable information; and also, each participating
school will receive an overhead calculator.
