Archbishop Myers Uses Videotape to Address Parishioners on US Bishops’ Actions in Dallas
The Most Reverend John J. Myers, Archbishop of Newark, has prepared a nine-minute videotape presentation on the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People that the Catholic Bishops of the United States enacted during their June13-15 meeting in Dallas.

In the presentation, the Archbishop outlines the provisions of the Charter and steps that the Newark Archdiocese will make to adjust its policies to conform to the historic document for the Catholic Church in America, and thanks the people of the Archdiocese for their affection, respect and support of the priests of the Church of Newark.

Because of the large number of Catholics in the Archdiocese of Newark and the need to provide information quickly in the days after the June meeting of the Bishops, Archbishop Myers prepared a single message that could be shown to all Catholics as quickly as possible after the Bishops Meeting. The Archdiocese serves some 1.3 million in the four northern New Jersey counties of Bergen, Essex, Hudson and Union. In a letter accompanying the videotape, Archbishop Myers asked all pastors to present the video either before or after Mass or at special gatherings in the parish as schedules permit. Pastors also received for copying and distribution to parishioners a transcript of the videotape, a copy of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, and a column by the Archbishop on the Charter from the June 19, 2002 edition of The Catholic Advocate, the Newark diocesan newspaper.

A version of the videotape presentation in Spanish a Spanish-language transcript and Spanish translation of the Charter, also were distributed to some 100 parishes in the Archdiocese.
