Bishop
Marconi Retires from Newark Archdiocese after 49 Years of Service Bishop Marconi, who has been Regional Bishop for Union County since his episcopal ordination in June 1976, submitted his resignation after he became 75 years old, as required by Canon Law. These past 26 years as Regional Bishop of Union County have been a special gift and grace for me, the Bishop stated. It has been my privilege to have played a vital role in the implementation of the Documents of Vatican II. Recalling the many people of the Archdiocese with whom he has worked over the years, Bishop Marconi said, I am indebted to the dedicated and hard working priests of the Archdiocese, especially of Union County, who have been so supportive and cooperative in my responsibilities. In addition, I stand in awe and admiration of our many talented and generous laity and religious who, together with their pastoral leaders and parish staffs, have made their faith communities caring, just and prayerful. In commenting on Bishop Marconis service to the Archdiocese, Archbishop John Myers stated, All of us in this local Church of Newark have been blessed by Bishop Marconis commitment to the faith and his love of family. We have also benefited from his caring, easy manner and devotion to the people of the Church. His stamp is evident on so many ministries within the Archdiocese. As Co-Director of the Division for Services to the Elderly for Catholic Charities, he reached out to assure older people that society still cherished their vitality. As chaplain for St. Josephs Home for the Blind in Jersey City, he brought our Lords comfort to those with disabilities. As Director of the Family Life Apostolate, he shared values that shaped the lives of his own loving, Catholic family. And through some 13 years of parish work in Union City, he met the needs spiritual and physical needs of working families. Bishop Marconi has served as President of the Northeast Italian Apostolate Conference, as a member of the Board of Trustees and Chairman of the New Jersey Catholic Health Association, and Chairman of the New Jersey Catholic Historical Records Commission. He also served as Episcopal Advisor of Region III of the National Association of Catholic Chaplains. Despite his retirement from daily ministry, Bishop Marconi will continue to serve the Archdiocese as needed in areas such as confirmations.
