McCarrick's Statement Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, Archbishop of Washington and former Archbishop of Newark, welcomes his successor in Newark, Archbishop John J. Myers, with the following statement: "Back in July of 1987, I was staying at the North American College in Rome after a visit of a few days on some Newark archdiocesan business. The announcement came that a new coadjutor bishop had been named in Peoria. It was John J. Myers. I can remember even today the enthusiasm and pleasure with which that announcement was greeted there at the North American College, where Bishop Myers had studied and where he was known by faculty and administrators alike. For some reason, I never forgot that, and I hoped that there would be that kind of joy at the appointment of every bishop. I have known Archbishop Myers since that time and have worked with him closely on a number of projects for the Bishops' Conference and the Holy See. He always comes across as a very good priest, a loving and warm shepherd and a man totally dedicated to the Church and to the Holy Father. He will bring these gifts and talents to the work of the Archdiocese of Newark. I have no doubt that he will win the hearts of the priests and people and that his genuine goodness will be a special grace to the Church in New Jersey. I look forward to being with him when he is installed as the fifth Archbishop of Newark. I am proud to have so distinguished a prelate and so good a man as my successor. I know he will find in the church of Newark a very wonderful family and a very faith-filled community of good and generous people. I wish him joy and great success in his years of service there."
