Statement of His Eminence, Edward Cardinal Egan
on the Appointment of
Archbishop-Elect Myers to the Archdiocese of Newark

The appointment of His Excellency, The Most Reverend John J. Myers as Archbishop of Newark has been received with great pleasure here in the Archdiocese of New York. I have known Archbishop-Elect Myers since his seminary days. He is an outstanding theologian, canonist and pastor of souls who has done splendid work for the Lord in his home Diocese of Peoria. We welcome him most warmly and assure him of our prayers for his every happiness here in the Tri-State community, where he has many friends and admirers among the clergy, religious and laity.

At the same time, I join with the People of God of the Archdiocese of Newark in thanking His Excellency, The Most Reverend Paul G. Bootkoski, for leading the Archdiocese as Diocesan Administrator since the appointment of His Eminence, Theodore Cardinal McCarrick as Archbishop of Washington this past November.
