Mother
Teresa Memorial Mass is Sept. 5
The first
anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa of Calcutta will be commemorated
on Saturday, September 5, with a noon Mass celebrated by Archbishop
Theodore E. McCarrick at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart
in Newark.
The public
is invited to participate in the memorial Mass, which will be a
tribute to the life and work of the popularly acclaimed "saint of
Calcutta," who died on September 5, 1997.
The founder
of the Missionaries of Charity, Mother Teresa was honored for her
work with the poor and suffering with the 1979 Nobel Prize for Peace.
The Missionaries of Charity have served the poor of the Newark Archdiocese
since 1981 when Mother Teresa established a soup kitchen and overnight
shelter for women at St. Augustine's Church, Newark.
The order
also maintains a contemplative foundation at St. Mary's Church in
Plainfield. Archbishop McCarrick recalled that Mother Teresa was
a frequent visitor to the Archdiocese who "always came with a message...
give God permission to use your life."
She consistently
urged prayers for priests and was always looking to the future,
the Archbishop said. "She had a simple agenda -- loving God and
serving the poor. She did that with joy and total dedication."
The Archbishop
said the prayerful presence and work of the Missionaries of Charity
"makes it seem as if Mother is still around."
