Special about Second Vatican Council to Air on PBS

The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS/WNET/Channel 13) will air a special two-hour program about the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II) on Friday, September 18, beginning at 9 p.m. The program, titled "Reflections on Vatican II," offers people of all faiths an opportunity to gain a better understanding of what happened between 1962 and 1965 that changed the face of Catholicism worldwide.

The program was produced by Dick Leach, owner of Resources for Christian Living (RCL) as a five-hour documentary video and CD-ROM titled "Vatican II: A Faithful Revolution." In a July letter to Catholic bishops across the country, Kim Duty, president of RCL, described the two-hour edited version as "a wonderful opportunity for all Catholics to learn more about this monumental event in the life of our Church. For those who remember the Council, it will help to remind them of the vision and hope that were shared. For those who were born after the Council it is a unique opportunity to learn the story of the Council and what it has meant in the history of the Church."

Archbishop John P. Foley, president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, was present as a priest-journalist for the second and third sessions of the Council. "I found that [the documentary] not only brought back many happy memories of that once-in-a-lifetime experience, but also helped to bring into focus for me the significance of much that was accomplished during that historic gathering," he said.

"Reflections on Vatican II" will air on PBS stations nationally on that day.
