Statement by The Most Reverend John J. Myers, Archbishop-Designate of Newark,
and The Most Reverend Paul G. Bootkoski, VG, Administrator of the Archdiocese,
Concerning the Attack on the World Trade Center

There is no way for us to place this morning’s horrific tragedy into perspective. No one should ever have to face the enormity of the destruction and loss of life that we have seen today. Unfortunately, every one of us in this Archdiocese has been touched personally by this sorrow.

In the days and weeks to come, all of us will be moved to our greatest ability to understand what cannot be understood, and at the same time to provide direction, compassion and solace to family, friends and neighbors. Know that our prayers are with you.

We have asked all pastors of the Archdiocese to open their churches to allow people of all faiths an opportunity to pray. We have also asked pastors to schedule special liturgies to pray for God’s assistance for ourselves and our nation’s leaders in the days ahead.
