Hoboken Parish Celebrates 150 Years
Our Lady of Grace Parish, 400 Willow Ave. in Hoboken, will celebrate its 150th Anniversary and the 125th Anniversary of the restored historical church on Sunday, October 7, at 12 noon. The principal celebrant for the Mass with be the Most Reverend Bishop Paul G. Bootkoski, V.G., Administrator of the Archdiocese of Newark. The Mass will be followed by an open house reception with refreshments and entertainment.

Our Lady of Grace parish was founded in 1851, and in 1854, the cornerstone of this first Our Lady of Grace church, on Willow and 5th St., was laid. On June 24, 1855, the first Bishop of Newark, Bishop James Bayley, officiated at its dedication. The present church, at Willow and 4th Sts., is a later edifice. Its cornerstone was placed on June 4, 1875, and its blessing carried out, in the presence of Archbishop Gibbons of Baltimore, on Nov. 10, 1878.

The Church's pastor, Father Kenneth J. Herbster, commented, "All parishioners, former and present, are invited to return to their mother church to participate."

As part of its sesquicentennial celebration, the parish will sponsor a dinner dance on Saturday evening, October 20, in The Casino in the Park, Jersey City. For tickets and information, please contact the rectory at (201) 659-0369.
