Proclamation

From its earliest days, the Church of Newark has been a church of immigrants. We have always welcomed the unique and fervent expressions of faith that people have brought with them from their homelands, and we continue to welcome and celebrate newcomers

The 440,000 men and women of Hispanic origin who today live and worship in the Archdiocese of Newark are a proud, energetic and vital example of deep, abiding Catholic faith in the Gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ. The Catholic tradition has enriched many of the immigrant peoples who sought new life in the New World.

The Hispanic experience blends family, culture, person, celebrations and outward expressions of faith in un abrazo, an embrace, a gift from God to be shared with all.

In recognition of the faith, devotion and love of Hispanics for this local Church, a love that transcends ethnic, cultural and geographic boundaries, I proclaim the week of October 1 through October 6 Hispanic Heritage Week in the Archdiocese of Newark

I rejoice with our Hispanic brothers and sisters in the faith, as they celebrate their homelands, their cultures, and their oneness in Christ.

Most Reverend John J. Myers
Archbishop of NewarkGiven this 27th day of September, 2002
