"Food for All: Right or Goal" The right to food will be the subject of the 15th annual World Food Day satellite teleconference. The Archdiocese of Newark will receive the satellite teleconference, "Food for All: Right or Goal," from noon to 3 p.m. Friday, October 16, 1998 in the auditorium of the Archdiocesan Center, Newark. A panel of international experts from Africa, India, Norway and the United States will discuss the plausibility of making the right to food universal, viable and binding. The panel moderator is Ray Suarez, host of the National Public Radio news program, "Talk of the Nation." Director of the Office of Human Concerns for the Archdiocese and the teleconference site coordinator, Catherine Furlani, explains that "for over 50 years, the world has struggled for political and economical rights and its implications upon food security in households, communities and nations." The teleconference will have a one hour break from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. to allow the sites to discuss hunger on the local level. "We need to look at what we can do to assure that the public no longer allows hunger to continue in our diocese, state, nation, and the wider world," Furlani said. World Food Day is observed in over 150 countries. It began in 1981 with the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the largest specialized agency of the UN. The program is broadcast worldwide in English, French and Spanish to an international audience at U.S. embassies and other international sites.
