Archdiocese will Offer Aid to Victims of Italian Earthquake

Archbishop Theodore McCarrick has called upon parishes to conduct a special collection to assist relief and restoration efforts after the recent earthquake in Italy. The voluntary collection will be taken in parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Newark on the weekend of October 11-12, 1997.

"As the Feast of St. Francis is upon us, I know that all of us are conscious in a very special way of the tragic earthquake that occured in the Umbrian hills in Italy, with such great damage to Assisi, the beloved city of that very special Saint," Archbishop McCarrick said in a recent letter to pastors. "We all thank God that only ten deaths occurred, but the damage to homes and in a special way to historic Churches was considerable."

The money will be collected and sent to relief efforts being conducted under the auspices of the Catholic Church in Italy. The Archdiocese invites people of all faiths to support the effort by sending a check, payable to Archdiocese of Newark - Italian Earthquake, Archdiocesan Center, Office of Finance, P.O. Box 9500, Newark, NJ 07104-9500.
