the Archdiocese of Newark According to the latest US Census data, some 2.8 million people live in the counties served by the Newark Archdiocese. The Catholic portion of this population is just over 1.3 million. At one time, the Archdiocese served Catholics throughout the state of New Jersey. Today, the Archdiocese maintains 235 parishes. Catholic education is a priority in the Archdiocese, with 139 elementary schools and 37 high schools, one university and three colleges providing education to 42,000 elementary school students, 16,000 high school students, and 16,600 college students. In addition, another 57,000 students receive education in the Catholic faith through elementary and secondary religious education programs at the parish level. Eight Catholic hospitals, 114 health care, ancillary care and medical centers, sanatoria and hospices, seven homes for the invalid and aged and close to 400 centers for other human services operate under the auspices or sponsorship of the Archdiocese. Today, 1,044 priests, 251 deacons, 1,374 religious Sisters and 96 religious Brothers minister to the needs of Catholics and non-Catholics alike in the Archdiocese. Each week, Mass is said in some 15 different languages, reflecting the diversity of the population, and the faith of the Catholic people of the Archdiocese. In 2003, the Archdiocese of Newark will be celebrating 150 years of service to Catholics in New Jersey.
