Cathedral
Concert Series Marks 31st Year with International Stars, Timeless
Music
The Cathedral
Concert Series has begun its 31st year of providing timeless classical
and spiritual music in the magnificent setting of the Cathedral
Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark.
This year's
Millennium Series, which runs from October 1999 through May, 2000,
features the internationally renowned Dorothy Shaw Handbell Choir
(Sunday, Oct. 31); organist Felix Hell, a 14-year old child prodigy
from Germany (Sunday, Nov. 21); the New Jersey Chamber Music Society
and New Jersey State Children's Choir (Sunday, March 19, 2000);
and virtuoso organist Ann Labounsky (May 21, 2000).
On Sunday,
May 7, 2000, The Cathedral Concert Series will host a Young People's
Choral Concert featuring the choral and orchestral talents of the
Newark Arts High School Choirs and the Schola Cantorum and Abbey
Orchestra of Delbarton School, Morristown.
A favorite
event of the Concert Series for the past 29 years - the annual Christmas
Carol Sing featuring The Cathedral Choir and Orchestra under the
direction of John J. Miller, will take place on Thursday, Dec. 16.
The Cathedral
Choir and Orchestra will also perform a Memorial Concert and Requiem
on Tuesday, Nov. 2 and a Choral Meditations on the Stations of the
Cross on Good Friday, April 21, 2000.
Says Cathedral
Basilica Choir and Orchestra Director Miller, "We're excited that
such world-class artists as the Dorothy Shaw Handbell Choir, Felix
Hall and Ann Labounsky are able to join us at the Cathedral Basilica
Concert Series this year. Their talents and styles truly enhance
the Cathedral Basilica as a center of spiritual and classical music
in the Northeast."
Most Sunday
performances in the Cathedral Concert Series begin at 4 p.m. Weekday
evening performances begin at 8 p.m. A suggested donation of $10
or a Free-Will Offering is requested.

The
Dorothy Shaw Handbell Choir
The Dorothy
Shaw Handbell Choir was organized in 1962 to be part of a play pageant
of the Nativity presented in the city of Ft. Worth, TX. Thirty-two
dedicated young people ring from over six octaves of bells, using
no tables, no music, and no conductor.
The Choir
has performed throughout Europe, Great Britain, the Orient, Australia,
South America, the Caribbean and Canada.
Suggested
donation of $10 per person is requested.

Felix
Hell, 14-year old Child Prodigy Organist
Felix Hell
took his first piano lesson at age seven. Eight months later, he
began organ lessons. Since his first professional concert at age
eight, Felix has given more than 70 recitals in Germany, France,
Russia and the United States.

Twenty-Ninth
Annual Christmas Carol Sing
The
Cathedral Choir and Orchestra
A Christmas
tradition for 29 years, the Carol Sing has become one of the most
significant Christmas concerts in Northern New Jersey. The ambiance
of candlelight and seasonal decor, along with the Cathedral Choir,
organ, brass, percussion and thousands of participants, combine
to create an event that must be experienced.

New Jersey Chamber Music Society and
New
Jersey State Children's Choir
Well-known
throughout the United States, the New Jersey Chamber Music Society
has also performed throughout Austria, Switzerland and France, and
has appeared on PBS's Great Performances and National Public Radio's
Performance Today programs.

Meditations on the Stations of the Cross featuring The Cathedral
Choir
The Cathedral
Basilica's choral tradition continues with this annual Good Friday
a capella event, including works of Allegri, Byrd, Tallis, Bruckner
and Poulenc.

Northern New Jersey as exemplars of music in the classical tradition.

Ann
Labounsky, Organist and Orchestra
Ann Labounsky,
chair of Organ and Sacred Music of Duquesne University, has earned
an enviable international reputation as a virtuoso performer and
improvisor. She will perform, among other selections, Concerto for
Organ, Strings, and Timpani by Francis Poulenc.
