Cathedral Concert Series Marks 31st Year with International Stars, Timeless Music

The Cathedral Concert Series has begun its 31st year of providing timeless classical and spiritual music in the magnificent setting of the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark.

This year's Millennium Series, which runs from October 1999 through May, 2000, features the internationally renowned Dorothy Shaw Handbell Choir (Sunday, Oct. 31); organist Felix Hell, a 14-year old child prodigy from Germany (Sunday, Nov. 21); the New Jersey Chamber Music Society and New Jersey State Children's Choir (Sunday, March 19, 2000); and virtuoso organist Ann Labounsky (May 21, 2000).

On Sunday, May 7, 2000, The Cathedral Concert Series will host a Young People's Choral Concert featuring the choral and orchestral talents of the Newark Arts High School Choirs and the Schola Cantorum and Abbey Orchestra of Delbarton School, Morristown.

A favorite event of the Concert Series for the past 29 years - the annual Christmas Carol Sing featuring The Cathedral Choir and Orchestra under the direction of John J. Miller, will take place on Thursday, Dec. 16.

The Cathedral Choir and Orchestra will also perform a Memorial Concert and Requiem on Tuesday, Nov. 2 and a Choral Meditations on the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday, April 21, 2000.

Says Cathedral Basilica Choir and Orchestra Director Miller, "We're excited that such world-class artists as the Dorothy Shaw Handbell Choir, Felix Hall and Ann Labounsky are able to join us at the Cathedral Basilica Concert Series this year. Their talents and styles truly enhance the Cathedral Basilica as a center of spiritual and classical music in the Northeast."
