Archdiocese
of Newark to Celebrate Dedication of the Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum
The Most Reverend Paul G. Bootkoski, D.D., Vicar General and Moderator
of the Curia of the Archdiocese of Newark, will preside over a Mass
and Dedication of the newly completed Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum,
340 Ridge Road, North Arlington, NJ, on Sunday, November 4, 2001,
at 11a.m.
The new addition to the current mausoleum constitutes an expansion
of the Archdiocese's ongoing mausoleum project, which began in 1996
by then Archbishop Theodore E. McCarrick. The mausoleum consists
of 8,130 crypts and 1,456 cremation niches.
The addition is fully accessible from the existing building, and
has its own new main entrance. The new entry includes a two-story,
2,500-square-foot atrium chapel capped with a skylight covering
the entry area. Through the generous use of skylights, sunlight
is abundant on the second floor.
The new building's exterior consists of 9,000 square feet of granite,
and its interior was built with 55,000 square feet of imported marble
complimented by rich oak paneling and a wide variety of religious
artwork. The columns and beams in the chapel are clad with Calacatta
White Marble, similar to the white marble used by Michelangelo and
other Renaissance artists.
The theme of the mausoleum is that of the Holy Cross. The Way of
the Cross has always consisted of meditating upon and uniting oneself
with the passion of Christ, pausing at the various stages of his
sorrowful journey to Calvary. The Pascal Mystery of Jesus' Suffering,
Death, Resurrection and Ascension, as well as the Stations of the
Cross, are represented in stained glass windows and inspiring mosaics
throughout the mausoleum.
