Archdiocese
of Newark Celebrates Black Catholic History Month
Black Catholic History Month is special to the afro-centric community
because it is a time to review and remember the lives of the Saints
and those African souls lost to the cruel treatment in the Middle
Passage while crossing the Atlantic Ocean from Africa against
their will to slavery. It is also a time to raise awareness of all
Catholics to their rich gift of cultural diversity.
Black Catholic History Month will be recognized through a month-long
exhibit of afro-centric artifacts and banners of Saints special
to the African American Community, in the lobby and in the hall
outside of the auditorium.
In addition, anyone interested is invited to attend sessions in
the auditorium of the Archdiocesan Center, 171 Clifton Ave., Newark,
on November 9 and 27, from 11:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m., that may give
them a greater understanding of the contributions made by Catholic
people of color to our Roman Catholic way of life. Tracey Battles,
Director of Black Catholic Affairs, and Deacon Marshall Andrews
will both be available to answer questions or direct people to resource
material should they desire some.
The Marylawn of the Oranges Academy Gospel Choir has been invited
to sing at the November 27 session from 12 noon- 12:20 p.m.
The Office of Black Catholic Ministry is also assisting the Martin
DePorres Guild of St. Marys Parish, Plainfield with planning
Memorial Mass to the late Archbishop Eugene Marino at 10:30 AM on
November 11. Father James E. Goode, OFN, Ph.D., founder and spiritual
leader of the Solid Ground Ministry and past President of the National
Black Clergy Caucus will be the celebrant and homilist.
