

Archdiocese of Newark Celebrates Black Saints The Archdiocese of Newark will celebrate the 5th Annual Mass honoring Saints of African heritage at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 15, 1998 at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. The Mass will also be a memorial for the late Auxiliary Bishop of Newark Joseph A. Francis, S.V.D. who died September 1, 1997. He was one of 13 black Bishops in the United States at the time of his death. Director of the Office of Black Catholic Affairs and a Mass coordinator, Lucille Foreman, said she hopes the Mass will "help the larger Church to understand that Black Saints had a role in the Church from the beginning." Foreman said that with 15,000 African American Catholic in the Archdiocese of Newark "it is important to teach people, especially our young people, about our Catholic Saints of African heritage. People want to learn about our history." Father Gerard Marable, associate pastor of St. Andrew the Apostle Parish, Gibbsboro, NJ will be the homilist. Priests from throughout the Archdiocese of Newark are invited to con-celebrate. On-site
