Archdiocese of Newark Celebrates Bishop Marconi’s 49 Years of Service
On Sunday, November 17, 2002 parishioners from Union County and other counties of the Archdiocese of Newark will gather to celebrate the retirement of The Most Reverend Dominic A. Marconi, DD, Auxiliary Bishop of Newark. The Mass, which will be celebrated by the Most Rev. John J. Myers, Archbishop of Newark, will be at St. Elizabeth of Hungary, E. Blanke St., Linden at 4 p.m. A reception following the Mass will be at St. Elizabeth School, 170 Hussa St., Linden.

His Holiness, Pope John Paul II, accepted the resignation Bishop Marconi, who has been Regional Bishop for Union County since his Episcopal ordination in June 1976, on July 1, 2002. He has served the Archdiocese as a priest for 49 years, 26 of them as a Bishop, submitting his resignation after he became 75 years old, as required by Canon Law.

“These past 26 years as Regional Bishop of Union County have been a special gift and grace for me,” the Bishop stated. “It has been my privilege to have played a vital role in the implementation of the Documents of Vatican II.”

In commenting on Bishop Marconi’s service to the Archdiocese, Archbishop Myers stated, “All of us in this local Church of Newark have been blessed by Bishop Marconi’s commitment to the faith and his love of family. We have also benefited from his caring, easy manner and devotion to the people of the Church.”

Bishop Marconi has served as President of the Northeast Italian Apostolate Conference, as a member of the Board of Trustees and Chairman of the New Jersey Catholic Health Association, and Chairman of the New Jersey Catholic Historical Records Commission. He also served as Episcopal Advisor of Region III of the National Association of Catholic Chaplains.

Despite his retirement from daily ministry, Bishop Marconi will continue to serve the Archdiocese as needed in areas such as confirmations.
