Statement
by The Most Reverend John J. Myers, Archbishop of Newark, On the
Crash of American Airlines Flight 587
Todays
air tragedy comes at a time when the soul of our country has been
wounded, and our faith is being challenged. Our hearts go out to
those who have lost their lives, their families and loved ones today.
The people of the local Church of Newark pray that they may be comforted.
It is particularly tragic that the crash struck a Queens neighborhood
that has already suffered tremendous loss of life as a result of
the September 11 attack. At this time of sorrow, we again see the
resilience and caring of the people of New York. News reports of
neighbors rushing to aid neighbors to safety, of firefighters from
the neighborhood joining rescue crews to fight the blaze, of instantaneous
response by officials to meet this disaster head-on, clearly show
that, despite the challenges, we as a people have not lost faith
either in God or in each other.
We are also concerned at this time for the courageous people at
the Port Authority, the police and the airlines, who have worked
tirelessly since September 11 to ensure the safety of everyone who
travels by air. How profoundly frustrated they must be at this time.
I ask the people of Newark to pray that these professionals will
continue to show strength and resolve as they labor to protect us.
