Youth Carry Torch from Mexico City in Guadalupan Run The Most Rev. John J. Myers, Archbishop of Newark, will greet the runners as they arrive in Union City. To celebrate their cause and pray for their victory, the Most Rev. David Arias, O.A.R., Vicar for Hispanic Affairs and Regional Bishop for Hudson County, will celebrate Mass at Holy Family RC Church, 530 35th St., Union City, at 6 p.m. Following the Mass, a Fiesta will be held across the street from the parish at Centro Guadalupe. The Fiesta will include traditional Mexican fare, music and dancing. The Tepeyac Association of New York will make a presentation on the struggles of the undocumented at the beginning of the Fiesta. A non-profit network of community based organizations, whose mission is twofold to promote the social welfare and human rights of Latino immigrants, Tepeyac is also a major sponsor and coordinator of the Torch Run. Maricela Quintana, Director of the Hispanic Apostolate in the Archdiocese of Newark said, “We need to create an awareness of what it means to be undocumented in this country.” She was in Mexico City for the lighting of the torch in the Basilica of Guadalupe. At their last stop before reaching their final destination of Saint Patrick Cathedral, the runners will spend the night in Union City. They will leave Centro Guadalupe on the morning of December 12 to arrive in New York City for the celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of Mexico. The Fifth Annual Guadalupan Torch Run took on a global message after the events of September 11, 2001. The runners bear with them the names and faces of the undocumented who died in the attacks. They also carry with them a request for amnesty for the undocumented Hispanics currently in the United States. Previous runs took place in the five boroughs of New York City, but never internationally. Editor’s Note: Following is a copy of the Torch Runners’ route through the four counties of the Archdiocese.
