A Partial List of Events During the Episcopacy of The Most Reverend Theodore E. McCarrick as Archbishop of Newark

l In 1986, Archbishop McCarrick was named the fourth Archbishop of Newark.

l In 1988, Archbishop McCarrick was a founding member of The Papal Foundation, a US Catholic foundation supporting projects essential to the mission of the Holy See. Since 1997, Archbishop McCarrick has served as the Foundation's President.

l In 1990-91, the Archdiocese completed "Continue the Mission," a successful $50 million capital campaign to provide endowments for Catholic education, development of vocations, clergy retirement, Archdiocesan Youth, the Sacred Heart Cathedral and Archdiocesan Center. This program was successful despite an economy in recession and American participation in the Gulf War.

l In 1990, Redemptoris Mater House of Formation was established in the Archdiocese to train young men to the missionary-diocesan priesthood.

l In 1995, the Archdiocesan Center was opened at a site directly across from Newark's Sacred Heart Cathedral, bringing together in one building almost all of the various departments and operations of the Archdiocese.

l In October 1995, Pope John Paul II visited the Archdiocese of Newark. During this visit, the Holy Father elevated Newark's Sacred Heart Cathedral to a Basilica, and held a summit meeting in the Archbishop's Residence with President Bill Clinton.

l In 1998, Archbishop McCarrick was one of three American clergy of different religions to visit China to discuss religious freedoms in that country. He had previously made several trips to China.

l In 1999, the Archdiocese launched a campaign for Stewardship in every parish to encourage individuals to give their Time, Talent and Treasure as a way to build up and strengthen their parishes.

l Archbishop McCarrick has visited many lands, including, Cuba, the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation, Vietnam, South Korea, Rwanda, Burundi, Kosovo, and Ethiopia, as a human rights advocate and to survey humanitarian needs.

l From 1996 to 1998, Archbishop McCarrick served on the Advisory Committee on Religious Freedom Abroad of the US Secretary of State.

l In 1999, Archbishop McCarrick was named a member of the United States Commission for International Religious Freedom.

l In March of 2000, Archbishop McCarrick and priests from the Archdiocese and other New Jersey dioceses met with NJ Lutheran leaders and ministers in a day-long session to examine the historic Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification signed in Fall 1999.

l In his 14 years as Archbishop of Newark, Archbishop McCarrick has ordained more diocesan priests than any other bishop in America.
