Archdiocese
Recognizes Excellence in Clerics and Laity
The formal
investiture of three new monsignors and a Protonotary Apostolic
will be held at evening prayer at 5:30 p.m Sunday, December 6, 1998
at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Newark. The celebration
will also include the awarding of the Jubilee Medal - Pro Meritis
to laity from throughout the Archdiocese of Newark.
Pope John
Paul II has elevated Fr. Robert Chabak, pastor of St. Valentine's
Parish, Bloomfield; Fr. Arthur Serratelli, rector of St. Andrew's
College Seminary, South Orange; and Fr. Peter Zaccardo, pastor of
Holy Family Parish, Nutley to the rank of Monsignor.
Archbishop
Theodore E. McCarrick said of the new monsignors, "the Holy Father
has once again blessed this local Church in giving us the new Prelates
and in raising Monsignor Charlie Stengel to the rank of Protonotary
Apostolic."
The title
of "prelate" (Latin for "one set before"), is an honorary distinction
given to members of the clergy by the pope in recognition of special
merit. Those who have been honored with this distinction are addressed
as "monsignor."
The Pope
has also elevated Msgr. Charles Stengel, pastor of St. John the
Baptist Parish, Jersey City, to Protonotary Apostolic to His Holiness.
Msgr. Stengel was named a monsignor in 1979. Protonotary Apostolic
is the highest honorary title that is awarded to a priest by the
Holy Father. His title will remain Monsignor.
At the
investiture, Archbishop McCarrick will also recognize 179 recipients
of Jubilee Awards in the Archdiocese. The Jubilee Award is a distinction
given to people, lay or religious, who have contributed in a special
way to the Archdiocese. It was established in 1987, the year of
the Golden Jubilee of the Archdiocese.
"It helps
to bring the Church of Newark together and gives us a chance to
say thank you in a very profound and meaningful way to people whose
gifts to us have been so important and so generous," said Archbishop
McCarrick.

the newly named monsignors and Protonotary Apostolic and the names
and towns of the Jubilee Award recipients.
Biographies
- A
Plainfield native Msgr. Chabak was ordained May 27, 1972. In addition
to his priestly studies at Immaculate Conception Seminary, he
earned a master's degree in secondary-school guidance and counseling
from Seton Hall University. Following ordination, Msgr. Chabak
was named to St. Mary of the Assumption Parish, Elizabeth, where
he served for seven years. He then was assigned to team ministry
at Christ the King Parish, Hillside, where he served for nine
years.
After
taking a sabbatical, he served at St. Theresa's Parish, Kenilworth,
for seven months. In 1990 he became pastor of Sts. Peter
and Paul Parish, Hoboken. He also was dean of Deanery 9, Central
Hudson, and a Presbyteral Council member. In 1997 Msgr. Chabak
was named pastor of St. Valentine's Parish, Bloomfield.
- A
Newark native Msgr. Serratelli was ordained Dec. 20, 1968, after
studies at Immaculate Conception Seminary as well as at the North
American College and the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome.
From 1969-70, Msgr. Serratelli served St. Anthony's Parish, Belleville,
before joining the faculty of Immaculate Conception Seminary,
where he taught systematic theology, 1970-72.
Msgr.
Serratelli then earned a licentiate degree in Sacred Scripture
from the Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome, in 1976. He earned
a doctorate in sacred theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University
a year later. He also taught at the Institute of Religious Studies
in the New York Archdiocese and served on the Archdiocesan vocations
board and Seton Hall University's sexual harassment committee.
In 1997 Msgr. Serratelli was named rector of St. Andrew's College
Seminary.
- A
Jersey City native, Msgr. Stengel completed studies for the priesthood
at Immaculate Conception Seminary and was ordained Mary 26, 1956.
After ordination, he served St. Margaret's Parish, Little Ferry,
and St. James Parish, Newark. In 1968 Msgr. Stengel joined the
religious studies department at Seton Hall University, South Orange.
He became assistant to the president of Seton Hall in 1971 and
was named dean of priests' community in 1978.
In 1979
he was elevated to Chaplain of His Holiness with the title monsignor.
In addition, Msgr. Stengel was procurator and advocate of the Archdiocesan
Matrimonial Tribunal. He then was appointed pastor of Sts. Philip
the Apostle Parish, Saddle Brook, prior to his 1994 appointment
as formation director of Immaculate Conception Seminary. That year
Msgr. Stengel was also named pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish,
Jersey City.
- An
Orange native, Msgr. Zaccardo was ordained May 23, 1964, after
completing studies at Immaculate Conception Seminary. He served
Holy Trinity Parish, Westfield, for a year before an assignment
to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Newark. He served there for
three years and then went to St. John's Parish, Bergenfield, for
seven years. Msgr. Zaccardo was briefly at Our Lady of the visitation
Parish, Paramus, before joining team ministry at Epiphany Parish,
Cliffside Park.
In 1981
he was named pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Newark,
and then pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, Newark, in 1987.
Msgr. Zaccardo was appointed pastor of St. Bartholomew's Parish,
Scotch Plains, in 1988. He was named pastor of Holy Family Parish,
Nutley in 1997. He also served as dean of Union Southwest Deanery,
Deanery 27; chaired the Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission; moderated
Bergen County CYO; and was member of the Archdiocesan Coordinating
Committee for parish Review and the Priests' Senate.
